About Heller’s Corner Free Speech Pop-Up Museum

Heller’s Corner Free Speech Pop-Up Museum is a community-driven initiative dedicated to celebrating and preserving the right to free expression in San Diego. Our pop-up museum brings together art, history, and civic engagement to explore the vital role that free speech plays in a democratic society.

Our Proposal

We propose a rotating, temporary exhibition space — a pop-up museum — that showcases the history of free speech in America, highlights local voices and stories from the San Diego community, and provides an open forum for civic dialogue and creative expression.

What to Expect

  • Interactive exhibits on the history of free speech fight in 1912 and the First Amendment
  • Local artist installations and community storytelling
  • Educational programs and panel discussions
  • A Soapbox Row podium where visitors can share their voices
  • Rotating themes highlighting free expression across cultures and generations

Location

The City of San Diego has locally designated the “San Diego Free Speech Site at Heller’s Corner” (HRB No. 1050) as a commemorative site under HRB Criteria A and B, recognizing it as a special element of the city’s social, historical, cultural, and political development and specifically for its association with the San Diego Free Speech Fight of 1912. The designation notes that this is a commemorative site without contributing historic fabric and that its significance lies in the events that occurred there rather than in existing buildings or paving. Heller’s Corner — San Diego, California. Exact venue details to be announced. The pop-up museum will be held at accessible community spaces throughout San Diego.
